Matheson People

Donald Matheson (1719-1782)
A Gaelic poet who farmed in Kildonan. He was widely respected as a religious poet of the new Calvinist dispensation.

James Sutherland Matheson (1796-1887)
Founder of the trading firm of Jardine Matheson & Co., he purchased the island of Lewis in 1844. He was created a Baronet in recognition of his philanthropy towards the people of Lewis during the famine of 1845-46.

James Adam Louis Matheson (b.1912)
Having emigrated to Australia, he became one of the country’s most admired engineers and lecturers.
