January 8 in Scottish History
Today in 1746 the burgh of Stirling surrendered to the Jacobite army. Significantly however, the castle remained in Hanoverian hands despite a Jacobite siege which caused many casualties on both sides. Hanoverian forces under General Hawley marched from Edinburgh to break the siege, and met the Jacobites at the Battle of Falkirk.Today in 1107 also saw the coronation of King Alexander I. Alexander had no children to succeed him, so his brother David became king. David had had plenty of practice in administration, as he had controlled much of Scotland's southern territories during Alexander's reign.
