Sir Gordon Smith Grieve Beveridge  (1933 – 1999)

Scottish chemist, President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, from 1986 to 1997. During his time he was responsible for extending the reach of the University to the South and West of the country.

He was born in St Andrews and brought up in Inverness then went on to study engineering at the University of Glasgow. After spending some time on fellowships and as visiting professors in the USA he returned to Scotland, settling as Head of the Department of the Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

From 1981 he sat on the boards of many professional and academic bodies .

William Wightman Beveridge (1858 – 1941)

Scottish footballer and track & field athlete. He was born in Cumnock, Ayrshire, and was capped three times for the national football team between 1879 and 1889 scoring one international goal. He was also an athletics sprint champion.

He was also a student of divinity at Edinburgh University and in 1883 he became the Reverend Beveridge and was ordained as a Church of Scotland minister. He lived and worked in Port Glasgow until his retirement in 1927.
