The Carmichael tartan was first registered by Richard Carmichael of Carmichael, the 30th Chief. He gave a sample to the Highland Society who was there to preserve tartans, not much is known about it. We don’t know if it was older or was woven for this, but this is the first time we see the tartan.
The term 'ancient' refers to the dye shades, normally lighter, whereas 'modern' refers to darker dyes.
